About Elizabeth

I am a NZ born mixed media artist working from my home studio in Sydney.  Settling in Sydney from the UK with my husband and then baby son in 2004 the following years were devoted to raising our young family, dipping in and out of creative projects and taking art workshops when time allowed. It was around 2019, with the help of my husband, I set up my home art studio, separately and idyllically located at the top of our elevated garden.

Nature serves as my endless well of inspiration.  I love to translate elements of the natural world into my pieces through an intuitive process, fusing abstract impressions with a touch of semi-realism.   Each layer guides the painting’s direction; it is often a dance between adding and subtracting, employing a medley of techniques, whether it’s glazing, scratching back, incorporating collage elements or stitching with threads and beads.   I thrive on the interplay of mixed media methods and materials across a variety of surfaces such as paper, canvas, linen and board.

More recently I have been pushing the infusion of hand stitching and beading into my creations which I refer to as “stitch art” or “thread painting”. Each stitch and bead is a type of mark much like a brushstroke, and this textural element imbues the piece with dimension and visual depth.  I find my contemporary interpretation of thread painting breathes life into my artworks which make them both distinctive and captivating.

My art process is an intuitive collaboration with the materials, unburdened by predefined paths.  I enjoy experimenting with different styles, juxtaposing organic, uninhibited elements with more structured, geometric elements.  This duality defines my “style” and continually fuels my love of making art.

My art has been welcomed into the homes of collectors spanning Australia, NZ, UK, France, Switzerland, Portugal, Canada, and the US. It warms my heart that they have chosen my creations to be at home in their spaces.

"Walking along the beach, paddling in the water; a cool breeze on a summer's day; evocative scents of gardenia and jasmine; the meditative practice of stitching with thread; a beautifully patterned fabric; old buildings; walking in the mountains.

All of these things and more spark my emotions and feelings and are translated into artworks, predominantly through an intuitive process that is constantly evolving.

I see shape, line and colour in everything and these components are important elements in my work weaving into symbols, patterns and motifs that have become part of my personal visual language.

As a mixed media artist I enjoy the juxtaposition of painting loose versus structured; smooth versus textured.   So much to explore! I hope my work exudes joy and pleasure to the owners of the walls they grace".
