A PLACE TO BEGIN

An intuitive stitching workshop with Elizabeth Sullivan

What we’ll work on

We will work directly from A Place To Begin PDF using its abstract patterns as a starting point rather than a set of instructions. The focus is on:

  • Responding to shape and space

  • Building texture through stitching

  • Allowing the work to evolve organically

There will be plenty of flexibility throughout the day and participants are reminded that there is no right or wrong way to approach the work.

Who this workshop is for

  • Those with basic stitching experience

  • Those returning to stitch after a time away

  • Experienced stitchers looking to work more intuitively

Materials

All materials are provided including linen, hoop, needles, scissors, threads, beads and other embellishments. While the piece is unlikely to be finished during the workshop, participants will take home enough materials to complete their work. Part of A Place To Begin PDF is included and forms the basis of the workshop

Studio experience

  • Hom-baked morning tea provided

  • Coffee (Nespresso), tea and water available throughout the day

  • BYO lunch

What to expect

This is NOT a technical class. It is about:

  • Learning how to begin

  • Staying with the work as it unfolds

  • Trusting your instincts

  • Letting imperfection be part of the process

“From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed so warmly by Elizabeth. Her creative space feels as if it is nestled in the trees and has a lovely light, bright and leafy outlook. Elizabeth has a lovely calm approach to her teaching style and the workshop title described the day perfectly. For someone who has struggled with subject matter, this workshop was just what I needed to set me on the right path. Provided for us was a wonderful selection of delightful threads and bits and pieces to work with and let’s not forget the extremely yummy morning tea. I would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone who is feeling a little stuck with their practice or enjoys to spend the day with other like-minded people learning new things.” (M Enright)
